Pavel Pepperstein

Sutton Lane is pleased to announce the third exhibition of Moscow artist Pavel Pepperstein.

Pavel Pepperstein is one of the most influential artists of Russia’s new generation. In 1987 he co-founded the experimental group of artists Inspection Medical Hermeneutics, which, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, developed a critical approach towards the influence of Western culture on Russia.

In this new exhibition Objects above the Sea, Pepperstein pursues his investigation of mystery and secrets. Pepperstein’s statement that “there is no unambiguous solution to a mystery” confirms his intention to provoke “a maximum of divergent readings” and to encourage the viewer to unravel certain messages. This perhaps best expressed in the artist’s statement as follows:

Objects above the Sea

“Of course, even before 2008, repeated appearances were recorded in our planet’s airspace of so called Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO). However, it is precisely this year that the appearance of the UFO became not simply more frequent but also became more demonstrative.

The objects, whose shape reminds mankind of unfamiliar flying spacecrafts, began to appear accompanied by signs which are very familiar to man and which find meaning in man’s soul. They create the impression that certain non-human beings are trying to establish contact with people with the help of these symbols.

Lately these occurrences have been frequently observed above the earth’s seas and oceans. It is as if the mysterious flying spacecrafts were “carrying” these signs in the hope that the combination of sea and sky is the ideal background to display them.

It is difficult to say if those who have persistently showed us these signs this last year are themselves familiar with the meaning and significance that mankind has become accustomed to see in them.”
